Russian gas phaseout in Hungary

Uploaded: 31 of May, 2023

The aim of the study is to examine how the share of natural gas in Hungary's total energy supply with a 34.1% share (2019, Hungarian energy balance) can be mitigated in the short term (by 2023/24) and in the long term (by 2030). Reducing consumption with energy efficiency or saving tools reduces our exposure to imports and CO2 emissions, while replacing natural gas with other energy carriers can also reduce prices in the short term, but at the same time, in certain cases, it can temporarily increase harmful emissions (burning oil, coal, biomass). We examine the possibilities for reducing Russian-origin natural gas and natural gas as an energy carrier in the Hungarian energy mix, and formulate proposals for measures to be implemented in the coming years, taking into account the difficulties of their implementation. In addition, we briefly discuss the role of crude oil (crude oil) and refined oil products from Russia in Hungary's energy and raw material supply, the possibility of replacing the Russian source, and the demand reduction potential.
